Why your dental practice isn't showing up when people ask AI

Someone new moves to town, or wakes up with a toothache, and they need a dentist. They do not flip through a phone book anymore. They ask their phone for the best dentist near them and they book with the first name it gives. If that name is not yours, you never even knew a patient worth years of visits was up for grabs.

A new patient is a long-term decision, made in one search

Picking a dentist is not a one-time buy. It is choosing someone a person, and often a whole family, will see twice a year for years, plus every crown, filling and emergency in between. That makes it a nervous, high-trust decision, so people lean hard on whoever their phone tells them to trust. When someone types or says "best dentist near me" or "dentist accepting new patients," the answer that comes back decides who gets a patient worth thousands over their lifetime. That moment is now happening inside an AI answer.

Ask Siri or ChatGPT for a dentist and you do not get ten blue links anymore. You get a short list, sometimes a single recommendation, read out loud or pasted into an answer. There is no page two. If you are not on that short list, you do not exist for that patient, no matter how good your practice is or how long you have been in that town.

Here is the part that catches dentists off guard: it is almost never the care. It is the data. The practices AI recommends are not better in the chair. They just have a complete, consistent record that AI can read and trust, and most of their competitors do not.

The fix: make your practice legible to AI

1

Fully complete your Google Business Profile

Set the primary category to dentist, list every service from cleanings and fillings to crowns, implants, cosmetic and emergency care, mark whether you are accepting new patients, and put in accurate hours. Add recent photos of the office and team. This one record feeds most of the local results patients see, and most of your competitors have left half of it blank.

2

Claim Apple Business Connect

Siri and Apple Maps run on Apple's own data, not Google. It is free and takes about ten minutes. Claim your listing, verify it, and fill in the same details. Now the iPhones in your area, which is most of them, can find you too when someone is looking for a dentist or an emergency appointment.

3

Add real schema to your website

Structured data that spells out you are a dental practice, where you are, your hours, and your services. It is invisible to visitors and essential to AI. Without it, an assistant reading your site has to guess what you do, and it would rather recommend a practice it does not have to guess about.

What else decides whether AI names you

The listings and schema get you into the running. A few more things decide whether AI picks you over the practice across town:

Recent reviews. People are anxious about the dentist and are choosing someone to trust with their family for years, so a steady flow of recent, positive reviews matters more here than in almost any local business. When AI is asked who to recommend, it plays it safe and names the practice whose five-star record clearly shows up.

Consistent name, address, and phone. AI cross-checks your details across the web. When they match everywhere, it trusts you are one real practice. When an old number or a wrong address from a past location still floats around online, it gets unsure and moves on.

New-patient and insurance clarity. A huge share of dental searches are "dentist accepting new patients" or "dentist that takes my insurance." Say plainly on your site and in your listings whether you are open to new patients and which plans you work with. AI can only recommend you for those questions if it knows the answer.
